Maritime Logistics: A guide to contemporary shipping and port management, Second Edition
Abstract
Every book has a reason why it ought to be prepared and published. The book you are holding now is no exception. For over 50 years both editors have been collectively researching and teaching the subjects of shipping, port and logistics management. Over the years, we observed an evolution in discipline development with the convergence of two distinct fi elds of shipping and port management. a convergence that occurred with the use of another fi eld of study: logistics and supply chain management. This change has raised concerns as to the effectiveness of teaching the subjects in a traditional sector-oriented approach which does not offer the comprehensive all-round knowledge required for the next generation of students. However, apart from the pedagogic value that this endeavour obviously brings, the book serves as a stimulant to further research in this emerging fi eld of maritime logistics. Judging from the subjects that the contributors to this volume chose to research and analyse, it is evident that there is an ample opportunity for empirical investigations that will guide future practice in maritime logistics.
