Computer Science: Notable Research and Discoveries (Frontiers of Science)
Abstract
Computer science is a rapidly growing discipline that continues to awe, inspire, and intimidate all those who interact with its many elements and capabilities. In the 19th century, the term computer referred to people who performed mathematical computations. But mechanical tabulating machines and calculators began to appear in the late 19th century and early 20th century, and in 1946, engineers J. Presper Eckert (1919–95) and John Mauchly (1907–80) built one of the fi rst modern electronic computers, known as the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC).
